What fill power actually means

Fill power is a laboratory measurement, not a marketing number, though it gets used as one. Manufacturers frequently print only the limit rating on the outside of the bag or in the product name, because it produces the more impressive, colder sounding number, and that is precisely the number that misleads people.

If you buy a bag advertised as rated to minus 15 degrees Celsius, and that number is the limit rating rather than the comfort rating, you should mentally expect genuine comfortable sleep somewhere closer to zero or perhaps minus 5 degrees, not minus 15. The comfort rating for that same bag is very often 8 to 10 degrees warmer than the limit rating that gets printed on the label.
