13 Day Manaslu Circuit Trek Overview

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a 13-day trekking route that circumnavigates Mount Manaslu — at 8,163 metres the eighth highest mountain in the world — through one of Nepal’s most remote and carefully protected restricted areas. Unlike the Everest and Annapurna circuits, the Manaslu route requires a special Restricted Area Permit that limits daily entries, keeping the trail genuinely uncrowded even during peak trekking season.

The route follows the Budhi Gandaki river valley from the subtropical lowlands near Machha Khola (930m) up to the wind-swept glacial basin below Larkya La Pass (5,106m). Along the way, trekkers pass through the living Tibetan Buddhist villages of Lho, Shyala, Samagaon, and Samdo — communities of the Nubri people whose culture, language, and monasteries are more closely connected to Tibet than to the Kathmandu Valley. The crossing of Larkya La at dawn, with a panoramic view of Cheo Himal, Himlung Himal, Kang Guru, and Annapurna II, is widely considered one of the finest high mountain experiences in Nepal.

Manaslu Treks and Expedition organises the 13-day circuit from Kathmandu. The package includes all meals and teahouse accommodation on trail, all required permits, licensed guide, and porter. Permits must be arranged through a licensed Nepali agency — they cannot be obtained independently — and a licensed guide is legally mandatory throughout the route.

Why the Manaslu Circuit Trek Is Becoming More Popular Among European and American Trekkers

The Manaslu Circuit Trek has seen a significant rise in popularity among trekkers from Europe and the United States over the past few years. Many travelers are searching for trekking destinations that offer beautiful mountain scenery, rich local culture, and a genuine Himalayan experience, and Manaslu delivers all of these in one journey.

One of the biggest reasons for its growing appeal is the peaceful atmosphere on the trail. Trekkers can enjoy quiet walking days, traditional mountain villages, and a stronger connection with local people. Many visitors say this creates a more memorable and personal trekking experience.

The region is also known for its spectacular scenery. The route passes through deep river valleys, waterfalls, forests, alpine meadows, glaciers, and finally reaches the breathtaking Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters. Throughout the trek, there are outstanding views of Mount Manaslu, Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli, Cheo Himal, Himlung Himal, Kang Guru, and Annapurna II.

European and American trekkers are also drawn to the cultural experience. The upper Manaslu region is home to Tibetan Buddhist communities where ancient monasteries, prayer walls, chortens, and colorful prayer flags remain an important part of everyday life. Staying in family-run teahouses gives visitors the opportunity to learn about local traditions and hospitality.

Another reason for the trek’s growing reputation is the improvement in trekking infrastructure. Comfortable teahouses, better transportation, experienced local guides, and well-organized logistics have made the journey easier while preserving the region’s remote mountain character.

Many international travelers also value responsible tourism. The restricted area permit system helps manage visitor numbers, supports local communities, and contributes to protecting the natural environment. For many European and American trekkers, this creates a better trekking experience while helping preserve the region for future generations.

Today, the Manaslu Circuit Trek is widely recognized as one of Nepal’s finest long-distance treks, attracting adventure travelers who want spectacular Himalayan landscapes, authentic mountain culture, and a rewarding high-altitude adventure.seeking spectacular Himalayan landscapes, authentic mountain culture, and a rewarding high-altitude experience trail’s peaceful atmosphere, culminating at,

Best Time for the Manaslu Circuit Trek

The Manaslu Circuit Trek can be trekked year-round but has two ideal seasons when mountain views are clear and trail conditions are safe.

Autumn — October and November

Post-monsoon skies are crystal clear, visibility is exceptional across the Himlung and Annapurna ranges, and dry trails make walking comfortable. Night temperatures at Larkya La drop to -5C to -15C — cold but manageable with proper gear. This is peak demand. Book permits and accommodation 3 to 6 months in advance for October.

Spring — March, April, and May

Rhododendrons bloom across the lower Budhi Gandaki valley, temperatures are moderate, and Manaslu’s south face is vivid against clear skies. Snow on Larkya La is deeper than in autumn but typically firm and crossable. March is quieter than April and May.

Winter and Monsoon

December to February brings heavy snowfall that frequently closes Larkya La. Winter trekking is possible for experienced alpine trekkers with extra flexibility. June to August is monsoon season — trails are slippery, mountain views are obscured, and leeches are common below Jagat. The monsoon season is not recommended for most trekkers.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Permits 2026

The Manaslu Circuit passes through a designated Restricted Area, making it one of the most regulated trekking destinations in Nepal. All foreign nationals must obtain the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (MRAP) through a licensed Nepali trekking agency. This permit cannot be purchased independently — it must be arranged before the trek starts, and a licensed guide is legally mandatory throughout the circuit.

Permits required for the 13 Day Manaslu Circuit Trek in 2026:

  • Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (MRAP) — USD 100 per person per week (September to November); USD 75 per person per week (December to August). The standard 13-day circuit requires two permit weeks.
  • Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP) — NPR 3,000 per person (approximately USD 22)
  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) — NPR 3,000 per person (approximately USD 22). Required after crossing Larkya La into the Annapurna Conservation Area.
  • Jagat Trekkers Information Centre fee — NPR 1,000 per person, paid at the checkpoint in Jagat

All permits are included in our Manaslu Circuit Trek package price and arranged in Kathmandu before departure.

Important Rules and Information

  • Solo trekkers can now obtain a Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (MRAP) without joining a group. However, the permit must still be arranged through a registered Nepali trekking agency, and a licensed trekking guide remains mandatory throughout the trek.
  • A licensed trekking guide is mandatory throughout; trekking independently is not permitted and will result in permit confiscation at checkpoints
  • Permit checkpoints at Jagat, Namrung, Samagaon, Samdo, and Bimthang — carry original permits at all times, photocopies not accepted
  • Drone use in the Manaslu Conservation Area requires a separate permit from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation in Kathmandu

Altitude Profile and Acclimatisation Schedule

The Manaslu Circuit Trek follows a gradual ascent, giving your body time to adjust to the increasing altitude. Over the first 10 days, you slowly climb through the Budhi Gandaki Valley before crossing the highest point of the trek, Larkya La Pass (5,106 m). Since the elevation gain is spread over several days, there are no major jumps in sleeping altitude, making acclimatization more manageable for most trekkers.

Day Location Sleeping Altitude Altitude Change
Day 2 Machha Khola 930m
Day 3 Jagat 1,410m +480m
Day 4 Deng 2,095m +685m
Day 5 Namrung 2,900m +805m
Day 6 Sama Gaon 3,530m +630m
Day 7 Sama Gaon 3,530m Acclimatisation rest
Day 8 Samdo 3,785m +255m
Day 9 Dharamsala 4,460m +675m
Day 10 Bimthang (after Larkya La 5,106m) 3,720m Summit + descent
Day 11 Tilije 2,300m -1,420m

Our guides carry supplemental oxygen and pulse oximeters throughout. Trekkers who acclimatise poorly at Samagaon or Samdo should not attempt Larkya La until symptoms fully resolve.
