Overview
Manaslu Base Camp Trek Overview
The Manaslu Base Camp Trek is a high altitude trekking route in the Manaslu region of northern Nepal that leads to the base camp of Mount Manaslu at around 4,800 meters. Mount Manaslu is the eighth highest mountain in the world with an elevation of 8,163 meters.
The trek usually begins from Machha Khola after a long drive from Kathmandu and follows the Budhi Gandaki River valley through villages such as Jagat, Deng, Namrung, Lho, and Sama Gaun. Most itineraries include an acclimatization day in Sama Gaun before hiking to Manaslu Base Camp.
The route passes through the Manaslu Conservation Area, which is known for mountain landscapes, glaciers, alpine forests, suspension bridges, and traditional Tibetan Buddhist villages. Trekkers can see mountain views of Manaslu, Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli, Ganesh Himal, and Manaslu North along the route.
Sama Gaun is the main settlement before the base camp and is one of the most important acclimatization villages in the region. From Sama Gaun, the trail climbs toward Birendra Lake and continues to Manaslu Base Camp through rocky glacial terrain.
The Manaslu Base Camp Trek is considered a moderate to challenging trek because of the altitude, long walking days, and remote mountain conditions. A licensed guide is required for trekking in the Manaslu restricted area, and trekkers need permits including the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit, Manaslu Conservation Area Permit, and Annapurna Conservation Area Permit if the route connects with the Manaslu Circuit.
Compared to Everest and Annapurna trekking routes, the Manaslu region receives fewer trekkers and remains less commercialized. Tea house accommodation is available in the main villages, although facilities become more basic at higher elevations.
The best seasons for the Manaslu Base Camp Trek are spring from March to May and autumn from September to November when weather conditions are more stable and mountain visibility is generally clear.

Best Time to Do the Manaslu Base Camp Trek
Spring Season from March to May
Spring is one of the best seasons for the Manaslu Base Camp Trek because of stable weather, moderate temperatures, and clear mountain visibility. During this period, the trail conditions are usually dry and safer compared to winter and monsoon months. Daytime temperatures at lower elevations are comfortable for walking, while higher areas such as Sama Gaun and Manaslu Base Camp remain cold, especially during mornings and nights.
From March to early April, temperatures are still relatively cold at higher elevations, but the skies are often very clear. As the season progresses into April and May, the forests below Namrung and Lho become colorful with blooming rhododendron forests, pine forests, and alpine vegetation. The Manaslu Conservation Area is especially beautiful during spring because of the combination of snow covered peaks and flowering hillsides.
Spring is also considered a good season for mountain visibility in the Manaslu region. Trekkers usually get clear views of Mount Manaslu, Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli, Ganesh Himal, and Manaslu North throughout the route. Mornings generally offer the best visibility before afternoon clouds develop in some areas.
Another advantage of trekking in spring is the relatively stable weather pattern. Heavy snowfall is less common compared to winter, and trails are usually more accessible. Tea houses along the route operate normally, and transportation conditions from Kathmandu to Machha Khola are generally better than during the monsoon season.
Spring is also one of the busiest trekking seasons in Nepal, but the Manaslu region still remains quieter compared to Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit trekking routes. Trekkers who want comfortable temperatures, active tea houses, clear mountain scenery, and stable trekking conditions often prefer the spring season for the Manaslu Base Camp Trek.
Autumn Season from September to November
Autumn is considered the most reliable and popular season for the Manaslu Base Camp Trek because of dry weather, stable conditions, and excellent mountain visibility. After the monsoon season ends, dust and pollution levels become very low, which creates exceptionally clear mountain views throughout the Manaslu region.
September is the transition month after monsoon. The hills and forests are greener because of recent rainfall, rivers carry more water, and waterfalls are stronger along the trail. Some sections of the road and lower trekking paths can still be muddy in early September, but conditions gradually improve later in the month.
October is usually the best month for the Manaslu Base Camp Trek. Weather conditions are stable, skies are clear, and temperatures remain comfortable for trekking. The mountain views during October are often at their clearest, especially around Lho, Sama Gaun, and Manaslu Base Camp. Daytime temperatures are pleasant for walking, while nights at higher elevations become colder but still manageable with proper trekking gear.
November is also an excellent month for trekking in the Manaslu region. The weather remains dry and stable, and trails become less crowded compared to October. Visibility is generally very good, especially during mornings and evenings. However, temperatures begin dropping significantly in higher areas such as Sama Gaun and the base camp region, particularly during late November.
Autumn is also an important cultural season in Nepal. Trekkers visiting during this period may experience major Nepali festivals such as Dashain and Tihar in lower villages before entering the higher Tibetan influenced settlements of the Manaslu region.
Because of the stable weather, reliable tea house operations, clear mountain scenery, and lower risk of heavy snowfall or rain, autumn is widely considered the best overall season for the Manaslu Base Camp Trek.
