11 Days

The Serang Gompa Trek is a cultural and nature-focused trekking route in the Nubri Valley of Nepal’s Manaslu region. The trail leads through the remote village of Bihi and continues into the Serang Valley, where Serang Gompa sits at an elevation of around 3,100 meters. The 11 Day Serang Gompa Trek is designed for trekkers who want to experience the quieter side of the Manaslu region without crossing the Larke La Pass. Along the route, you walk through the Budhi Gandaki Valley, visit traditional Tibetan-influenced settlements, experience the local Buddhist culture, and spend time near an active monastery. The route also passes through the Shyagya zone, known for its traditional no-killing practice and rich natural environment.

Serang Gompa Trek Overview

The 11 Day Serang Gompa Trek is a quiet, culture-first journey into the Nubri region of the Manaslu Conservation Area, designed for travelers seeking a genuine Buddhist monastery experience rather than a high-pass crossing. Instead of finishing at Larkya La like the main Manaslu Circuit, this route turns off the main trail at Bihi village and climbs steeply into the side valley that holds Serang Gompa, a monastery that has stood at 3,100 meters for roughly five hundred years under its original name, Sancen Rabten Norbuling.

You will walk the same lower trail used by salt traders for centuries, following the Budhi Gandaki River through Machha Khola and Jagat before branching away from the crowds toward Bihi, an ancient Tibetan-influenced village believed to be around a thousand years old. From there, a demanding climb through the small settlements of Tsak and Kogpa brings you to the monastery itself, where you sleep inside an active religious community, join the early morning prayer session if you wish, and wake up to views of Manaslu’s northern flank that almost no trekkers ever see.

This entire route lies within the Shyagya zone, a centuries-old Tibetan Buddhist no-killing tradition that has kept the surrounding forests unusually rich in wildlife. Because the trail avoids any technical passes and tops out at 3,100 meters, this trip carries a much lower altitude risk than the standard Manaslu Circuit, while still requiring the same Manaslu Restricted Area Permit, a licensed guide, and a minimum group size of two. It suits fit, previously experienced trekkers who want solitude, monastery culture, and a real sense of discovery over a big mountain pass photograph.

History of Serang Gompa

Serang Gompa, also known as Sangchen Rabten Norbuling, is a historic Tibetan Buddhist monastery located in the remote Kyimolung Valley above Bihi Village in the Nubri region of northern Gorkha, Nepal. The valley is regarded in Tibetan Buddhist tradition as a sacred hidden valley, or beyul, and has long been associated with meditation and Buddhist practice.

According to the traditional history of Serang, the monastery was established by Chokyi Gyaltsen, a spiritual master connected with the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Local accounts also associate the wider Kyimolung Valley with great Buddhist masters, including Guru Padmasambhava and Jetsun Milarepa. These accounts form an important part of the religious heritage of the valley, although some details belong to local Buddhist tradition rather than independently documented history.

Serang developed as a place for Buddhist teachings, meditation and spiritual practice for the communities of the remote Nubri region. For generations, the monastery was maintained through a lineage of spiritual teachers, preserving Tibetan Buddhist practices in a region where religious traditions remain closely connected with everyday village life.

Over time, the original monastery became badly deteriorated. A major chapter in its modern history began with Nubri Lama Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, who returned to his ancestral monastery after completing advanced Buddhist studies and a three-year retreat in Sikkim. Seeing the poor condition of Serang, he took an active role in restoring the monastery, with support from his older sister, Ashe Yeshe Sangmo.

The renovated monastery was formally consecrated in 1992 and offered to His Holiness the 4th Dodrupchen Rinpoche. On that occasion, the monastery received its present name, Sangchen Rabten Norbuling. It subsequently became connected with the Dodrupchen lineage and the Longchen Nyingtik tradition, an important cycle of teachings within the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism.

The monastery’s role expanded after the restoration. A monastic community was established, followed by retreat centres for monks and nuns. Traditional Buddhist teachings, meditation and study continue to form the heart of the institution, making Serang an important spiritual centre for people from Nubri and beyond.

Today, visiting Serang Gompa is more than a stop on a Himalayan trekking route. It offers an opportunity to experience the living Buddhist culture of the Nubri region, learn about its spiritual traditions and see how an ancient Himalayan religious heritage continues to be practiced in one of Nepal’s remote mountain valleys.
