Trip Overview
The 11 Day Serang Gompa Trek is a quiet, culture first journey into the Nubri region of the Manaslu Conservation Area, built for travelers who want a genuine Buddhist monastery experience rather than a high pass crossing. Instead of finishing at Larkya La like the main Manaslu Circuit, this route turns off the main trail at Bihi village and climbs steeply into the side valley that holds Serang Gompa, a monastery that has stood at 3,100 meters for roughly five hundred years under its original name, Sancen Rabten Norbuling.
You will walk the same lower trail used by salt traders for centuries, following the Budhi Gandaki river through Machha Khola and Jagat before branching away from the crowds toward Bihi, an ancient Tibetan influenced village believed to be around a thousand years old. From there a demanding climb through the small settlements of Tsak and Kogpa brings you to the monastery itself, where you sleep inside an active religious community, join the early morning prayer session if you wish, and wake up to views of Manaslu’s northern flank that almost no trekkers ever see.
This entire route lies inside the Shyagya zone, a centuries old Tibetan Buddhist no killing tradition that has kept the surrounding forests unusually rich in wildlife. Because the trail avoids any technical pass and tops out at 3,100 meters, this trip carries a much lower altitude risk than the standard Manaslu Circuit while still requiring the same Manaslu Restricted Area Permit, licensed guide, and minimum group size of two. It suits fit, previously experienced trekkers who want solitude, monastery culture, and a real sense of discovery over a big mountain pass photograph.
